Auschwitz, 1942. Before I say anything else, this is unlike anything I’ve ever read. It does something new and bold. It’s about a Nazi officer attempting to conduct a romance with the wife of another Nazi officer in the German part of the concentration camp. In other words, it’s about the people in charge of the most horrifying deeds you can imagine, from their point of view, in their houses, in their kitchens and gardens and bedrooms. Amis is like an expert sniper: aiming his considerable weapon at exactly the right angle, he scores the most palpable hit. He makes you see this terrible world anew. He atomises it. A superb achievement and a very good novel.
