Ирвин Уэлш родился 27 сентября 1958 г. в Эдинбурге. В 16 лет бросил школу, переехал в Лондон, где пел и играл на гитаре в панк-группах, несколько раз был арестован. В конце концов вернулся в родной Эдинбург и устроился работать в департамент жилищного строительства. Окончил Университет Хериота–Уотта. Дебютная книга «На игле» опубликована в 1993 г. и на сегодняшний день в мире продано более миллиона экземпляров. История о молодых наркоманах из Эдинбурга автобиографическая, поскольку Ирвин Уэлш провел юность в компании людей с подобной зависимостью. Спустя три года, в 1996 г., по мотивам этого произведения снят одноименный фильм.
